When a distributor lists a product on their ecommerce site, submits a data file to a retailer, or exports a catalog to a trading partner portal, the content driving that output comes from the PIM layer.
Some PIM platforms also include digital asset management (DAM) capabilities, which handle the storage, organization, and linking of images, spec sheets, installation videos, and other media to product records. Others connect to a separate DAM system. Distributors managing large volumes of product imagery and technical documentation alongside structured product attributes should confirm whether a PIM they’re evaluating includes DAM functionality or requires a separate integration.
Not every distributor needs a dedicated PIM. For distributors managing a small, stable catalog sold through a single channel, ERP item records and a structured spreadsheet process may be sufficient. A dedicated PIM becomes necessary when one or more of the following conditions apply:
SKU count and catalog complexity: At scale, manual product data management produces errors, omissions, and inconsistencies that affect search performance, customer experience, and fulfillment accuracy. Trading partner data exchange requirements: Distributors supplying retailers, buying groups, or national accounts often receive mandated data format requirements from those partners. Adhering to the correct format consistently and at scale requires a system that can format and deliver product data on schedule.

Data flows into the PIM from multiple sources, is enriched and validated against defined quality rules, and flows outbound to each channel in the required format.
NetSuite integration is typically bidirectional. Product master data created or updated in NetSuite syncs to the PIM, ensuring product content is always built on current operational data. Enriched product content from the PIM, including approved descriptions, attributes, and digital asset links, syncs back to NetSuite item records so the ERP reflects the same product information each channel is using. Common integration approaches include direct API connections, middleware platforms such as Celigo or Patchworks, and native connectors offered by PIM vendors that have built NetSuite integrations.
Product catalog syndication distributes formatted product data to multiple channels and trading partners simultaneously. Instead of maintaining separate product files for each channel, distributors manage one master dataset and publish updates across all channels from a single workflow. When a supplier updates a specification or an attribute changes, that update moves through the PIM to every connected channel without manual rework.
When product management is spread across multiple systems and teams, ad hoc or informal processes produce inconsistent data. To that end, product data governance sits inside the PIM workflow. Before product data reaches a channel, it passes through a review and approval process to confirm completeness, accuracy, and compliance with channel requirements. Purchasing teams contribute supplier data, marketing teams enrich descriptions and assets, and operations teams validate specifications before publication.
Automotive aftermarket distributors operate under a specific set of product data standards that make PIM operationally necessary. PIES (Product Information Exchange Standard) and ACES (Aftermarket Catalog Exchange Standard) are the two primary standards governing how product data is structured and exchanged in the automotive aftermarket, both maintained by the Auto Care Association.
PIES defines how product information, including descriptions, pricing, digital assets, and product attributes, is formatted and delivered to trading partners and channel platforms. ACES defines vehicle fitment data: which parts are compatible with which year, make, model, and engine combinations. Distributors and suppliers in the automotive aftermarket are expected to deliver both: PIES for what the product is, ACES for what it fits.
Managing PIES and ACES data at scale requires a PIM built to handle those standards directly or through structured integration. PIM platforms such as Salsify, Akeneo, and Syndigo are commonly used by aftermarket distributors to manage PIES and ACES data, enrich product content, and deliver formatted data files to retailers, ecommerce platforms, and trading partners. NetSuite does not manage PIES or ACES data as part of its standard item record structure. Automotive parts distributors running NetSuite as their ERP need a PIM layer to handle catalog data formatting and standards compliance, with the integration between the two systems ensuring that transactional and content data stay aligned.
Wrong fitment data in the automotive aftermarket drives returns, damages customer trust, and creates liability exposure. A PIM that manages ACES fitment data accurately and delivers it in the correct format to each channel reduces that risk significantly.
A NetSuite PIM integration delivers value only if the data flowing between the two systems is current, complete, and mapped correctly. Several evaluation criteria apply when assessing how well a PIM connects to NetSuite:
Bidirectional sync: A PIM that only receives data from NetSuite but does not return enriched content to NetSuite item records creates a split between what your ERP knows about a product and what each channel presents. Bidirectional sync keeps both systems aligned so operations, finance, and sales teams are working from consistent product data.
Item record field mapping: NetSuite item records have a defined structure, and the PIM's data model must map to it accurately. Custom fields, matrix items, and multi-location inventory configurations in NetSuite require specific mapping decisions during implementation. Poor field mapping produces data gaps or overwrites that undermine the value of system integration.
Channel output flexibility: PIM platforms vary significantly in how much flexibility they provide for generating channel-specific output formats. Distributors supplying trading partners with mandated data templates, selling through multiple ecommerce platforms, or submitting PIES files to automotive aftermarket retailers need a PIM that generates required output formats without manual reformatting after export.
Implementation experience with NetSuite environments: PIM vendors publish native NetSuite connectors at varying levels of depth and reliability. Evaluate the connector against your specific NetSuite configuration, including any custom fields, subsidiary structure, or third-party integrations already in place, before committing to a platform.
Distributors who manage product information well reduce catalog errors, speed up channel onboarding, and give customers accurate, complete product data that drives purchasing confidence and reduces returns.
