To support this dual-channel operation and continue their legacy of excellence, the company sought to modernize its digital foundation and eliminate the technical debt of its existing Miva Merchant platform. Their goal was to enhance eCommerce capabilities, particularly by automating the complex B2B customer-specific pricing. They partnered with Snapshot Design to assist with this critical migration to Shopify Plus.

 

 

The Challenge: 

RuffStuff Specialties, a high-volume B2B and B2C distributor of specialized off-road components, faced a critical operational bottleneck caused by their legacy Miva Merchant platform. The outdated system lacked the necessary features and architectural flexibility to support modern commerce demands.

The most pressing pain point was the inability to easily manage customer-specific B2B pricing at scale, which necessitated manual workarounds and administrative burdens on the sales team. Additionally, the platform’s rigidity made it exceedingly difficult to maintain and update their extensive catalog of products, requiring significant manual effort to manage complex product data, rich media (images and video links), and core content pages.

In short, the legacy system was generating technical debt and hindering the company’s ability to offer the necessary streamlined, self-serve experience their wholesale customers demanded.

The Solution:

A Strategic Migration to Shopify Plus

  • The strategic decision was made to execute a complete replatforming to Shopify Plus to unify RuffStuff's B2B and B2C channels on a single, scalable platform. The implementation partner, Snapshot Design, adopted a "right-sized" service model, prioritizing a "teach them to fish" approach. This meant balancing technical implementation with extensive training and guidance, empowering the RuffStuff team to handle future maintenance and keeping the project within a reasonable budget.

    Key solution areas included:

    • B2B Logic Implementation: The primary challenge of custom pricing was solved by leveraging Shopify’s native B2B functionality, specifically Shopify Catalogs. This feature was configured to seamlessly apply customer-specific pricing to wholesale accounts upon login, providing a personalized and accurate buying experience.

    • Complex Data Migration: The team dedicated significant effort to the translation and structuring of thousands of legacy product attributes and entities from Miva to the new Shopify Plus architecture. This included successfully migrating and integrating images and video links directly into product descriptions for a richer content experience.

    • Front-End Optimization: Focus was placed on configuring the site’s key structural components. This involved perfecting the Home Page layout, optimizing the top navigation, and logically restructuring the collections and category pages to improve product discoverability and overall site usability.

    • Client Enablement: Throughout the project, the team provided detailed support and training on the new B2B features, data management, and front-end configuration, ensuring RuffStuff's internal staff was fully prepared to own and scale the site post-launch.
